HARLEY WIGGLESTEIN AND THE OLD LADY NEXT DOOR

HARLEY WIGGLESTEIN AND THE OLD LADY NEXT DOOR

When the cold October winds blow the last of the fall leaves from the trees, things…and people…are not always what they seem.

Hi, I’m Millie Stillman. The Schumachers next door are selling their house, and I hope a girl just my age moves in. Me, her, and Angie can all be friends. We could build a treehouse in her tree. It’s the best treehouse tree in the neighborhood.

Maybe her bedroom could be across from mine, and we could have a special code to send each other messages. It would be great to have another girl in the neighborhood. There’s just me and Angie, and she lives two whole blocks away. Unless you count Harley. Which I don’t.

And I super-wished. Please, oh please, let my super-wish come true.

The only way Millie’s super-wish could have come true is if it had been made seventy years earlier. A strange old lady moves in next door, and even stranger things start happening. Millie wouldn’t be caught dead at her house, but Harley? Harley is another story. Why does she keep going over to her house? Has the old lady cast a spell on her?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…

A 5-star Readers Favorite middle-grade author, Cary Sowers, had two dreams when she was growing up, to be a singer in a band and to be an author.

Dreams can come true.

She got to do both!

When she wasn’t singing or writing, she was raising her five children with her husband. She also has three grandchildren Piper, Willow, and Ella.

Cary lives in the country near the small town she grew up in, with two of her sons, Miles and Robert, a dog named Jake, Cupcake, the cat, and a lot of pet fish.

ENDORSEMENTS

To Whom It May Concern (especially if you’re holding this book),

I teach 5th grade. I’ve seen my share of misunderstandings, lunchroom drama, and, friendships forged over who “stole “borrowed” whose tablet stylus. But Harley Wigglestein and the Old Lady Next Door? It gets it exactly right.

“My class tore through the first Harley Wigglestein book, and now we’re halfway into the second—this one’s even better. Millie’s Halloween-season misunderstanding about Harley and the old lady next door has my students HOWLING. Sharp, funny, and sneakily packed with empathy, it’s the kind of story kids beg for. Every classroom needs a copy.”

Again it’s surprisingly heartfelt. Bonus: it sneaks in empathy without your kids even noticing, which is a definite plus in my grade book for creative writing.

Add it to your shelf. Or risk your students revolting in the name of Harley.

Sincerely,
Mrs. J. Mairs
Totally gassed teacher, frazzled keeper of the tablet stylus

Dear Tween Reader,

“I related to Millie way too much… even though I still can’t figure out why she freaks out about Harley. she’s hilarious, and honestly? I kinda want to be on Team Harley—just don’t tell Millie. This book is awesome and everyone should get it. Like, seriously.”No clue. All I

From,

Karen (age 11½)
Just a tween for Harley
