Description:

Shakespeare created the myth of the Macbeths as indefensible murderous conspirators. But now internationally bestselling author Val McDermid drags the truth out of the shadows, exposing the patriarchal prejudices of history

Britain’s reigning “Queen of Crime” (The Scotsman), Val McDermid has ensnared audiences worldwide for over thirty years with her thrilling and masterfully plotted crime oeuvre. A radical, rip-roaring counternarrative drawing on the historical record, Queen Macbeth delivers an illuminating portrait of Shakespeare’s most famous villain, and the treacherous pursuit of ambition that made her legendary.

A thousand years ago in an ancient Scottish landscape, a woman is on the run with her three companions – a healer, a weaver, and a seer. The men hunting her will kill her – because she is the only one who stands between them and their violent ambition. She is no lady: she is the first queen of Scotland, married to a king called Macbeth. As the net closes in, what unfurls is a tale of passion, forced marriage, bloody massacre, and the harsh realities of medieval Scotland. At the heart of it is one strong, charismatic woman, who survived loss and jeopardy to outwit the endless plotting of a string of ruthless and power-hungry men. Her struggle won her a country. But now it could cost her life.

Immersive and utterly riveting, Queen Macbeth is an electric reimagining of one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated tragedies and reaffirms McDermid as one of the preeminent writers of our day.

🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

My Review:

A masterful blend of historical drama and personal introspection, set against the harsh and tumultuous backdrop of 11th-century Scotland. McDermid’s storytelling is immersive and engaging, presented through dual timelines that explore the life of Queen Gruoch and her companions—a healer, a weaver, and a seer. The character development is rich and relatable, allowing readers to form a genuine connection with the protagonists. However, the novella’s brevity leaves readers wishing for a more extended exploration of these fascinating characters and their relationships. Additionally, the modern prose style, while accessible, may feel slightly out of place to some, potentially detracting from the historical setting. Nonetheless, Queen Macbeth is a triumph of historical fiction that challenges the Shakespearean myth and reaffirms McDermid’s reputation as a master of the genre. For those intrigued by innovative retellings of classic tales, this novella is a must-read, leaving readers with much to ponder about the nature of ambition and the strength of women who defy the odds. Many thanks to Grove Atlantic and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this.

Book Description:

When a meteor veers off course and crash-lands on Earth, it triggers a chain of cataclysmic environmental events that threaten the planet’s very survival. In the wake of this disaster, scientist Dipesh Patel and his team find themselves on the front lines, racing against time to uncover the mystery behind this enigmatic force. With global climates spiraling out of control, they must navigate political intrigue, scientific dilemmas, and their own moral convictions to find a solution.

As they delve deeper into the anomaly’s origin, they discover its uncanny intelligence and unexpected connections to their own beliefs and existence. What begins as a desperate fight for survival becomes a profound exploration of life’s value and the hidden potential within humanity.

🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

My Review:

"A Taste of Earth" hooks you right away, throwing you into a wild ride where a rogue meteor crashes on Earth and wreaks havoc like it’s got a personal vendetta against the planet. Dipesh Patel, our brave scientist hero, and his team are on the case, trying to solve the mystery before everything goes up in flames. Newton mixes action and deep thoughts like a chef whipping up a cosmic stew, and it’s pretty delicious.

Right off the bat, you can tell Newton knows how to keep things interesting. Dipesh and his crew, including the no-nonsense Irene and fame-hungry Logan, every chance he gets, face a slew of challenges.

Enter Hachiman, the alien probe with a name that sounds like it could lead a samurai army. This probe has an intelligence that’ll make you rethink your relationship with your smart toaster.

Newton’s descriptions are spot on without making your head spin. The story hops from a diseased ocean to a trashed Russian forest, showing how bad things get when space rocks crash the party. These scenes really drive home the eco-friendly message: it doesn’t take much to turn paradise into a junkyard.

However, a few things feel rushed, like trying to cram too much onto your plate. The ending leaves some questions hanging, especially about those Hachiman pieces and their world tour of destruction. And what happened to the Gobi Desert? Did it get a VIP pass? The characters’ internal struggles are also a bit light, like a diet soda when you wanted the real thing.

Despite these quirks, the story is a fun, brain-tickling read. Newton blends sci-fi and deep thoughts better than a smoothie, making "A Taste of Earth" linger in your mind like a catchy tune. It seems ripe for a sequel, and I’m here for it, popcorn in hand.

In a nutshell, "A Taste of Earth" serves up a tasty mix of action, science, and philosophy. Newton’s story entertains while making you ponder humanity’s footprint. Sure, it could use a bit more fleshing out, but it’s a solid read that leaves you chuckling a time or two and contemplating life’s big mysteries. Well done, Mr. Newton, it’s sci-fi just the way I like it!

My Rating:

My rating is a 5/5 stars for this delicious read

Description:

Is love on the small screen better than the real thing?

A young divorcee finds herself in the ideal world of her favorite 2000s teen soap in this second-chance, whimsical romantic comedy from the author of This Spells Love.

Newly divorced on the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Brynn is sick of heartbreak. She thought she had found her happy ending, but now she’s now living with a roommate, Josh, to afford her mortgage and trying to adjust to her new single life. At least she’s got Carson’s Cove to binge, her beloved 2000s teenage soap. The show ended unexpectantly on a cliffhanger after five seasons, and the two main characters, Sloan and Spencer, never got to declare their love for one another. The show is still perfect in Brynn’s eyes; despite all the drama that goes down, things always have a way of working out in Carson’s Cove . . . unlike her own life.

So when a birthday cake surprisingly shows up on her and Josh’s doorstep, Brynn makes a wish for the one thing she always wanted (but failed to achieve herself): a happily-ever-after.

The next morning, she doesn’t wake up in her apartment. She’s in Carson’s Cove . . . and Josh is there too. Everyone seems to know them, except they’re not Brynn and Josh; they’re Sloan, the sweetheart of Carson’s Cove, and Fletch, the town’s bad boy. And to get home, they have to make Brynn’s wish come true by ensuring Sloan and Spencer, the hometown heartthrob, end up together at last. But as they spend more time together, Brynn and Josh realize that Carson’s Cove might not be as perfect as seen on tv . . . especially when they start developing feelings for each other in a plot twist nobody expected. Will they stick to the script, or will real love change the story forever?

🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

My Review:

In her latest novel, Kate Robb ventures into the imaginative with a narrative twist that sends its main characters into a setting on the silver screen as the once youthful leading lady and a quintessential bad boy—fifteen years into their future to offer a finale that promises to captivate. Regrettably, the intended audience is as sparse as it is unexpected, limited to the very individual responsible for their temporal displacement, alongside a backdrop overly cluttered with distracting references to DC, and a surplus of teenage drama tropes.

Set against the charming tableau of a small East Coast town, replete with its distinctive idiosyncrasies, the novel’s environment is vividly painted, successfully immersing readers in its quaint streets and local color.

While the dialogue rings true to life, the sporadic profanity, inconsistent with the established tone of the narrative, suggests a lapse in editorial consistency that detracts from the otherwise immersive experience.

Moreover, the insertion of tepidly executed romantic scenes seems an unnecessary deviation from the established norms of prime-time melodrama, where a slow burn and suggestive fade to black might better serve the genre’s traditional expectations.

As an editor and author who experiences literature through audiobooks due to visual impairment, certain narrative discrepancies particularly stand out:

• The logistical oversight where the main character, Brynn checks her phone—a device previously lost—adds a jarring note of inconsistency.

• A typographical error referring to the "Marching Brand" rather than "Band" disrupts immersion.

• It’s clear that "through" was the intended word in the sentence "A top 40 track booms though a speaker system so loud…," raising questions about the oversight of the editors and proofreaders. I only hope this review is in time to pull the manuscript and correct.

• The believability of a rescue scene amidst a stormy sea stretches credulity, even allowing for dramatic license.

• Additionally, the inclusion of a blind date at the start that fails to propel the narrative forward could have been restructured for greater efficiency and impact.

• Lastly, I recommend that the author relocate the author notes to her website, enticing fans to visit and potentially sign up for her newsletter.

🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

Despite these critiques, several elements do maintain engagement:

• The dialogue, outside of its occasional harshness, captures the essence of the characters compellingly.

• The secondary characters are robust and intriguing enough to perhaps warrant their own spin-offs, but unfortunately they come from the land of the silver screen where their lives do fade to black.

• The central plot surrounding Josh is particularly well-crafted, though his earlier involvement might have enriched the story further.

• The portrayal of Brynn’s quest for a fairy-tale ending offers a universally relatable thread.

• The slow-burning romance, while appealing, might have either adhered more closely to genre conventions with a fade to black or embraced a bolder approach.

🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

In conclusion, Robb’s novel presents a mix of small-town romance and comedic elements with a unique twist that, despite its flaws, might prove a delightful read for those seeking a light, escapist narrative in the vein of a romantic comedy. The epilogue aspect adds a pleasing touch, providing a glimpse into the characters’ futures, which is always a gratifying closure for fans of the teenage melodramas.

🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

My Rating:

I’ll assign it a 4 out of 5, noting the absence of half-point increments.

🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

Thanks goes to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group – Random House, Dial Press Trade Paperback for my opportunity to read and review this novel.

Prickle Forrest Books – Long Lost Book Review – Max Monroe – Tapping The Billionaire

Prickle Forrest Books

April 2024

Dear Readers,

Wow! Wow! Wow!

Long lost book reviews found! Woohoo! Woohoo!

Somehow these next few reviews that will be posted were lost in the draft folder. Now that management has cleaned out that pathetic thing we came across these reviews. Even , though we’re posting them now, luckily they were posted to Amazon and Good Reads appropriately at the time they were read and written. And since we still believe they were exceptionally entertaining books, we here at Prickle Forrest Books want our followers the chance to see what we think about such authors as Max Monroe, Lucy Score, and a few others. So thanks for bearing with us. Don’t hesitate to let us know what you think either.

NetGalley Reviewer: 1375356

If you want one of those romances that lean toward the realistic, but naughty side, then Tapping The Billionaire will fit the bill.

This romance is a little like Sleepless In Seattle with a smattering of Fifty Shades Of Grey. But to be honest the sex wasn’t as bad in this one. Quite tasteful in some respects and with a much more palatable plot line even if the online dating app plot isn’t really all that new.

The Max Monroe team did a great job trying to make billionaire tech mogul and all around gorgeously handsome , Kline Brooks fit into Georgia Cummings’s world. And the whole scene with the lime juice had to be my favorite. The writers did an excellent job making that realistic. Kline’s definitely worth his weight in gold on that first date.

Then there’s Georgia. Cute, intelligent, confident, but yet still unsure of herself. Always doubting she could catch a man like Kline. And to catch him while still holding on to her virginity is quite the feet especially when some women would just throw themselves at the billionaire at any chance. It’s funny though that Georgia has been working for the bad boy for two years and is now just paying attention to him… Well sort of. She definitely comes across aloof from reality at times, which just shows you how normal people can be to the surroundings around them. It’s quite humorous to watch her realize that not all billionaires live the glitz and glamour side of life.

All in all, if you’re looking for a billionaire romance to pick up, I do suggest you check out Max Monroe’s Tapping the Billionaire; Billionaire Bad Boys Book 1 because even though the books a collaborative effort by a number of authors they did a fantastic job putting this one together with its believable settings, witty dialogue, outstanding visceral cues to make you feel like you’re right there with them in New York, and not to forget about the romance, it’s quite sizzling and well worth the read. I’m definitely looking forward to the next books in the series.

Available on Amazon, Barns and Noble, etc in paperback, E-book, audio, and hardback.

*****

My Review:

Truly brewed bliss with ‘Love & Lattes‘.

For fans of quaint small-town narratives, ‘Love & Lattes‘ is the perfect addition to your reading list. From the start, author Remy Sinclair excels in creating an immersive experience, inviting readers into the heart of Willowbrook, a town that boasts a unique charm and a closely-knit community. Through the lens of a newly adventurous barista and the chaos of the photographer among the tranquility, this novel explores themes of family, friendship, and love.

The narrative stands out for its richly detailed descriptions, bringing the small town and its inhabitants to life with vivid clarity. This attention to detail, while enhancing the sense of place, occasionally prolongs the narrative, offering readers an extended stay in each scene. This characteristic might slow the pace, but also deepens the connection to the setting and characters, crafting a more nuanced and immersive experience.

Love and Lattes‘ is the perfect book for those who appreciate the intricacy of small-town dynamics and the depth of character-driven storytelling. Sinclair’s detailed narrative style not only paints a picturesque view of life in a small town with Clair Mitchell and Daniel Collins but also encourages a slower, more reflective reading pace. Her approach aligns well with readers looking for a story that offers both an escape and a thoughtful exploration of what it really means to love.

Love & Lattes‘ should definitely be your next read. It’s a story that’ll make you feel good and leave you thirsty for more.

Thanks for checking out this review.

Prickle Forrest Books – Special – Author Interview with Barbara Howard

PRICKLE FORREST BOOKS

A Romance Author’s Interview

Welcome to Prickle Forrest Books, Barbara Howard!

It’s wonderful you could take the time to share with the Pricklers a bit about you and your writing.

First, set the scene and give us some background. When did you decide to become a writer? Anyone influence you? Why romance? What book is this for you? And how did you come up with the idea for your current novel, A Match Made in Murder.

I began writing stories as a child and enjoyed reading mystery short stories. As an adult, P.D. James was a strong influence on my decision to pursue the author life. I always include romance in my stories because that layer is a conduit of so much human emotion that everyone can connect with. It provides the deep dive into the characters inner desires and motivation. I really enjoy exploring that. A Match Made in Murder is book #3 in my latest series, The Clover City Files. I had decided that the release date would be on Valentine’s Day and to incorporate that as the main theme of the book. A matchmaker helping twelve couples get married on Valentine’s Day seemed like the perfect setup for something to go awry and challenge me to pull off a Happily Ever After.

What type of romance do you write? Do you ever think about writing something other than this type of romance? Historical? Fantasy? Mystery? Contemporary? Western? If so what?

Mystery. My current work in progress (WIP) is Romantic Suspense. I can’t imagine straying far from romance.

Please give us the low-down on your book, A Match Made in Murder.

Matchmaker extraordinaire, Fiona Murphy, is renowned for orchestrating love stories that culminate in dreamy weddings. This Valentine’s Day, she’s outdone herself by arranging twelve weddings in a grand celebration at the upscale Boat House restaurant, where love is on the menu and bliss is in the air. As the town gathers for the grand event, excitement and anticipation fill the room. Among the attendees is Fiona’s efficient and loyal assistant, eager to ensure everything runs smoothly. There’s also an unexpected guest—Fiona’s charismatic yet enigmatic ex-husband, whose presence adds a layer of complexity to the event. However, as the festivities kick off, a hushed realization sweeps through the gathering—someone is conspicuously absent. The joyous occasion takes a dark turn when a lifeless body is discovered, casting a shadow over the day meant for love and celebration. Suddenly, the Boat House transforms from a haven of romance to a crime scene, and everyone present becomes a suspect. With the victim silenced forever, secrets, grudges, and long-buried emotions rise to the surface. It is a tale where love and betrayal intermingle, and uncovering the truth becomes the ultimate act of love.

When you received your first copy of your newly published book, A Match Made in Murder how did you feel? Did you flood social media with a book selfie? Celebrate with Champagne? Or pass out?

I can still see it in my peripheral vision 🙂 It’s always close by. My besties and family celebrate with me and I share on social media. I have a video chat with a few to talk about the story and listen to their guesses for whodunnit.

Do you ever struggle with writing? Ever want to quit? How close have you come to Shoving the manuscript into a drawer and wait a month to even think about getting it out again? Or do you just plug on with the mantra “I think I can… I think I can…”?

I don’t struggle with writing but I have to consistently manage distractions, especially competing ideas. I am a relentless plotter. Scrivener is my favorite tool to keep me on course. And I use Read Aloud in MS Word to help with the momentum if I’ve been away from the manuscript and need to get the juices flowing again.

Where do you write? At your desk with coffee? Out on the deck with a cocktail? In bed propped up with pillows and hot chocolate? In other words, where do you do your best writing at?

My best writing on my WIP is done at home. I’m too easily distracted to work in coffee shops or libraries. However, I jot down bits and pieces of scenes and dialogue whenever the moment strikes. And that can be anywhere and at anytime.

Who has been your favorite character to write? Have there ever been any who just nagged and nagged you to get them on paper? Have there been any characters you absolutely thought your readers wouldn’t like, but turns out they did? Ever purposefully put characteristics of someone you might know into a character and hope that they didn’t figure it out? Protect the innocent, no names, please.

At this moment, my favorite character is Harper Martinez. She is a tabloid reporter that helps the main character solve the mysteries. Her presence puts things into motion. I’ve had readers ask me about characters that (I thought) were minor and not very interesting. So I added more pages to that character in the next book in the series. Also, a few asked about a family member that was mentioned in dialogue (for backstory) but I had no intention of introducing into the story. But I did solely because of their interest in him. He’s another favorite of mine. I’m a quilter so I enjoy “piecing” things together. That’s how I approach using pieces of personalities and physical characteristics of people that I know.

Which do you prefer to write, hot-hot romances or sweet romances? What’s the reaction you get from people you tell you’re a romance writer?

My stories are cozy and clean romance mystery style.

Everyone loves a box set. If you had to do one with a holiday theme, which holiday would you choose? And would you do it all yourself or share with two other romance writers? If you shared, who would the other writers be and what holidays would you choose?

I would probably choose Valentine’s Day because passions are already running hot and expectations are high for the ‘perfect’ day. I enjoy collaborating on anthologies and group projects.

Is there a book on your backlist that needs some more loving? Briefly tell us about it and where we can get it.

The Spice Code

Restaurant owner and chef Raphael Parera’s life takes a dark and treacherous turn when he falls for the captivating charms of Isabella. Little does he know, his newfound love is hiding a sinister secret – she’s a cold-blooded murderer. Kidnapped by Isabella, Raphael’s only lifeline is a bag of groceries containing a message that holds the key to his location. Bonus: Recipes included. The Spice Code can be purchased here: https://books2read.com/u/bzBWWq

Which type of media do you like to publish in the best? E-book? Audio? Paperback? Hardback? If you’ve done Audio, would you ever consider using the updated voices they have out now for AI to record it?

I publish in all available media, including voice narration and AI-generated audiobooks.

What do you have going on for the future? More writing? Blog tours, book signings, book festivals? If so, where and when could your readers find you?

I’ve been participating in blog tours, interviews, and panels so far this year. And I’ll be at in-person book fairs in Ohio when the warm weather arrives. Readers can find me through my website at www.authorbarbarahoward.com and sign up for my monthly newsletter. As the current president of the Great Lakes Fiction Writers, we have a variety of meetings and activities to keep me busy outside of my personal writing projects, a romantic suspense novel and a short story for a crime fiction anthology.

What’s the worst thing you hate to do as an author? What’s the best thing? And give us your best advice for those aspiring authors out there.

The worst thing about being an author is having to stay on top of the changing trends in the publishing industry and adjusting your marketing strategy. The best thing about it is connecting with readers. It’s a joy! My shortest piece of advice is to be honest with yourself about how much time you have available to spend on writing and continuing to learn the craft. There are no shortcuts. By doing this, you can set appropriate expectations and goals so that you can enjoy the journey at each step.

Finally, if you knew what you know now as a writer, when you first started out, would you have taken the leap to write and publish your stories? What’s one happy memory you’d like to share about your writing with those here at Prickle Forrest Books?

I think the writer’s life chose me and I can’t imagine not doing this. My favorite happy memory is a recent one. There is someone special in my life who always buys a copy of my books but they don’t read them. And audiobooks put them to sleep. So we meet on the release day in a video chat and I describe each scene in the book. Sharing that time together makes my heart incredibly happy.

It seemed like a good idea at the time…

Will my therapist keep me on or just quit?

Joel:

My grandmother’s dying wish was to meet my wife. So I introduced her. Except it turns out my grandmother is not dying, and she has no idea about my divorce.

I’m in trouble.

My Review:

Pretending In Paradise is a delightful RomCom that weaves a charming tale of a fake relationship turned real from the first dance to the last kiss with the resort antics in-between. Lily and Joel’s journey to appease Joel’s “dying” grandmother unfolds at a beach resort adding a scenic backdrop to their rekindled romance. The witty dialogue keeps the reader engaged while unique scenes and clever plot twists add an extra layer of enjoyment. The story beautifully explores the challenges of failed relationships and the importance of communication making it a heart warming read with a perfect blend of humor and romance.

Definitely not “Pretending In Paradise” when I say this is worth the read.

Marking this as a favorite in the sweet contemporary romances. Well done, Franky Brown.

Book Review

January 10, 2024

Dear Readers,

Amidst the whirlwind of holiday festivities, cookbook endeavors, and the meticulous editing of short stories, I finally found a tranquil moment to share my thoughts on Christmas In Tahoe. While I devoured the pages over the holidays, the frenzy of the season and creative projects delayed this review. My sincere apologies to both the readers eagerly awaiting my insights and the talented author who crafted this enchanting tale. Now with the chaos subsided, lets delve into the magic of Christmas In Tahoe…

“Laurel Reynolds is a romance novelist with a celebrity pedigree who returns to her Lake Tahoe roots in search of a fresh start. Falling in love was not on the agenda. McGovern Scott is all in favor of her plan to start over—as long as it’s with him. But has Laurel fallen for Tahoe’s favorite son or the sexy hero she created? And with Christmas quickly approaching, can Laurel find the courage to leave the past behind and focus on the future?”

Anticipating an overwhelming emersion in — all things — Christmas – with Christmas In Tahoe, the novel pleasantly surprised me. Instead of the expected holiday extravaganza, the story unfolds with a charming romance that feels akin to Die Hard, but romantic. This unexpected twist on the typical holiday romance genre sets the novel apart from offering readers a refreshing and unique take on the festive narrative. Christmas In Tahoe proves that sometimes straying from the traditional path can lead to an even more enchanting and memorable reading experience.

Martha O’Sullivan weaves a charming tale around Laurel Reynolds who grapples with the decision of completing her book and settling in a picturesque Tahoe. Amidst the incredible descriptions and clever dialogue, a blossoming romance unfolds between Laurel and McGovern Scott adding a sweet touch to the holiday backdrop. The heart of the setting of the story lies in the uncertainty of whether this newfound love will be compelling enough for Laurel to make Tahoe her permanent home. As the plot unfolds, readers are taken on a journey filled with warmth suspense and the question of whether love can truly anchor Laurel to the enchanting world she rediscovers in Tahoe. Just as Die Hard challenges Christmas movie norms, this novel cleverly challenges the expectations of a traditional romantic holiday story making it a delightful and engaging read. Christmas In Tahoe has earned a piece of my heart and Ms. O’Sullivan a new fan.
